Dog Breed of the Month for December: Rottweiler

on

🐶 Ancient Origins

Rottweilers are descended from Roman drover dogs—large, robust dogs used to herd and protect livestock as the Romans marched across Europe around 2,000 years ago.

These dogs accompanied Roman legions, helping move cattle and guard camps.

🏘️ Development in Germany

After the Roman Empire withdrew from Europe, the drover dogs were left behind in the region around Rottweil, Germany.

Locals used them to herd cattle to market and protect farms, earning the breed its original name: “Rottweiler Metzgerhund” (Rottweil butcher’s dog).

🐕 Medieval & Early Modern Roles

     Rottweilers were highly valued for:

Herding and driving cattle to market

Pulling carts laden with meat and goods

Guarding property from thieves or wild animals

They were known for their strength, intelligence, and loyalty, making them indispensable to farmers and merchants.

🌍 Introduction to Other Countries

With the decline of herding and market carting in the 19th century, Rottweilers became less common in Germany.

Breed enthusiasts began standardizing Rottweilers for police, military, and protection work.

The German Rottweiler Club was founded in 1901, and the breed spread internationally from there.

🏅 Modern Rottweiler

Today, Rottweilers are known for their strength, intelligence, and versatility.

     They excel as:

     Working dogs: police, military, search-and-rescue

     Guard dogs: homes and livestock

Companion animals: loyal and affectionate with proper socialization

Recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1931.
